On Feb. 1, 1960, four freshmen demanded demanded to be served at F.W. Woolworth Company store after buying school supplies. They new they wouldn't be served but they wanted to take a stand. The first sit-in wasn't very effective but once more people started participating, civil rights organizations started to spread the word. Many times the protesters would get food thrown at them. This was a nonviolent way of protesting adn had a lot of impact.

Do's and Don'ts of Sit-ins:
Do :
  • Show yourself friendly at the counter at all times
  • Sit straight and always face the counter
Don't:
  • Strike back, or curse back if attacked
  • laugh out
  • hold conversations
  • block the entrance
